On this page you will find our foley indwelling catheters. Foley catheters are the most used indwelling urinary catheters. Urinary health looks different for many people needing a urethral catheter. The supplies you need depend on any surgery you had, other medical conditions, and/or the state of your urinary tract. Below you will learn about what foley indwelling catheters are and the best one for you.

    Indwelling Foley Catheter

If there is no urethral damage, a foley (indwelling) catheter is inserted. A flexible tube is passed through the urethra. This tube goes into the bladder for urine to drain into a drainage bag (valve).

Convenience is the greatest part of having a foley catheter. It can be used for short-term and long-term care. In other words, the valve can be open for urine to drain into the toilet if you are close to a bathroom. Likewise, the valve can stay closed until the urine is able to be drained. The valve is either strapped to your leg or a stand posted on the floor. Clearly, this is not the most subtle way of catheterization, but many, it is the only option.

A foley catheter stays put in the bladder by way of a small balloon. This balloon is filled with a small amount of sterile water or saline solution to prevent the catheter from falling out. An indwelling (foley) catheter is inserted like an intermittent catheter is. Unlike an intermittent catheter that is taken out, a foley catheter is left in. It does need to be changed at minimum, every three months.

When there is damage to the urethra, a suprapubic catheter is necessary. This is inserted through a hole in your abdomen.

When is a Foley Catheter Used?

If your bladder’s muscles and/or nerves aren’t functioning properly. This can be the result of:

    • Spinal cord injuries
    • Multiple sclerosis
    • Side effects from medicines
    • Other nerve issues

A foley catheter cannot be self-inserted. Therefore, usually a caregiver or physician will insert indwelling catheters. Depending in your individual needs, you will be fitted for the diameter that will work best for your body beforehand.
